GREAT SUNDAY OF PREHISTORIC GOODNESS!Date: Sunday, MAY 13, 2012
Location: Surry, VA
tide: low
weather: 78/sunny
It was 7:00 a.m. when my alarm went went off at the house and at the same time the train through Hanover came rolling through that early a.m. I could have easily hit my alarm and caught a few more hours of sleep, but I knew what I had set out to accomplish today and was determined to take advantage of the weather, the time, and the lower tide of the Miocene Marine fossil infested James River. after a quick gear check I grabbed my backpack, river shoes, small cooler and the 4 runner and I were off!!
when I first set foot in the sand, as usual I walk straight to the wash line, found my first small tooth and it was on from there. overall it was a pretty good and rewarding day. I wonder how many people out there on the beach knew that there were 5-20 million year old fossil shells and shark teeth right under their feet where these prehistoric monsters use to feed and dwell. oh well, I don't mind keeping it a secret (more for me.hahaha)
but as I was walking back to the truck this man wearing a nice size 4 inch meg tooth around his neck with his backpack arrived and started for the beach cliffs. i wonder if he found anything???
findings:
fossil shells and coral- one impression fossil
tiger tooth, hammerhead tooth, bull shark tooth, sand tiger tooth, hemi serra tooth (my favorite), dusky. happy hunting guys!!!
