SPEACHLESS 10/9
As I mentioned in my last post I haven't found anything big in a while and I feel my time is coming.
5 A.M. , my alarm invades my dreams of ancient seas and its monsters. Preferring the darkest depths, I silenced the alarm and fell back into the abyss. Not but 10 minutes later, my eyes opened quickly to the realization of what I must do. The sun was coming, whether or not I met it, it was up to me. I rolled out the bed threw on some shorts, a sweat shirt and some busted vans. I said bye to Katie and grabbed my keys. A hot cup of 711’s finest, am talk radio and few dead Kennedy songs later I pulled up to the banks of the James river. The tide was low and the water was calm. There was a gentle breeze and the cry of osprey in the distance. I found a few small sand tigers and a sweet little Hemi with feeding damage. Then I found a broken mako but it had good size to it and a perfect root. Shame, that would have a really nice tooth. After a few hours with the tide coming back in, I turned around and started back down the beach toward my car. I looked at the teeth that I had found and admired the mako. The plan was to hit up a few other beaches further up river. As I walked I searched higher up near the cliffs hoping to see something shimmer in the sand. After a few false alarms my pace quickened with anticipation of the next beach and a still medium tide to search in. Then I saw a small bit of bone poking out of some shells. I always check bits of bone for feeding imprints and to see if I can identify the species or can tell what part of the animal it was. Thinking it was just another piece of whale bone I bent down to pick it up…
Even describing this makes my heart race.
What I thought was just another bit of bone, just kept coming until I was holding a monster 5 and ½ inch Meg. From what I can remember I ran to the river and washed it off then walked around in circles cursing. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Heart beating out of my chest I walked back to my car staring at the treasure in my hand. I decided I was going to skip the trip to the other beaches and just head home. Driving back tooth in my lap and a smile on my face I thought of my father and how proud he would have been of me.
I needed that.
