5-9-09 Look with your eyes not your handsThis weekend was a lot better than last weekend. I came up from NC to get a little R&R and ended up getting up at the crack of morning to hit the beaches. For some reason I can’t seem to sleep in when I’m home for the weekend. All I can think about are the teeth on the beach that I will NEVER see if I don’t get my butt out of bed and go get them!! I haven’t slept past 6am in over 2 months. When I’m off I’m either at GMR or back home on the beaches of VA. Thank God my woman is so understanding of my obsession. She laughs and calls me her “little geek.” Which is quite funny because I am not little, and I’m not a geek… ok, well, maybe a little… I guess that makes me a little geek… my God, she was right!!!
All in all it was a great weekend. I found my first whale bone with bite marks. I ran into bmorefossils who came down with a friend to hunt. Hey Bmore… you hunted my beach now you have to let me hunt one of yours!! He ID’d one of my finds on the spot. It’s a Giant Porpoise tooth; however, the tip is broken. I found many nice teeth. If you ever see a nice tooth that I don’t point out then please let me know. I don’t always realize the rare ones when I see them.
Also, I don’t think I’ve ever been so embarrassed on the beach as I was that day. Bmore’s friend had found two REALLY nice mako’s. They were 2+ inches. He showed them to me and I picked it up, looked at it, went to give it back to him followed by several nice compliments, and DROPPED it!!!!! It all happened in slow motion… All I could do was pray while this jewel was falling to the rock, shell, and sand mixture below. My prayer went something like this… “Please, God, don’t let this tooth break or chip when it lands on the ground. I promise I’ll be a good boy and eat all my vegetables.” My prayer was answered because it didn’t chip as it bounced off of a shell. I would have given him the 2.5”+ mako that I found a few weeks earlier if it had broken. He was so cool about it which made it a lot better for me. Thanks man, I can’t remember your name, sorry. Anyway, I learned a valuable lesson… Look with your eyes not your hands.
