Recent finds, August 1

I hadn't hit my spot recently, so I went this weekend. It was worth the trip: 5 more shark teeth (all Carcarhinus sp.), a beautiful little urchin, 2 pufferfish jaws (as if I don't have enough from Lee Creek....), and a few very pretty gastropods. OH yeah, the two sea turtles were back--only 25 ft offshore! I also saw a moray. I've included those as the bottom photos.

hi there DW! The shells are the original aragonite, just like the James City molluscs at LC, although some of the cowries I do believe have been mineralized to calcite (they're heavier than they should be, and seem to be harder/tougher as well). The aragonite in the urchin has been completely mineralized! I have 2 complete ones now, and what may be another one in matrix; I have to clean the algae & goop off of it first. I was just given a project on Kauai, which is the only island w/Pliocene strata. At least 2 megs (fragments) have been recovered from there. I"ll be staying there for a couple of weeks come January. PLEASE let me find a Hawaiian Meg!!!
