speechlessIt almost didn't happen more time then I'll be able to write on this post. My car has been enduring engine problems for almost a month now, THANK GOD for my mother allowing me to take her personal vehicle to North Carolina for the weekend. I arrived @ 2am Saturday morning and crashed out in the hotel room. Saturday was a blast, there were way more people at the festival this year. A big reason was the weather, beautiful and sunny. I finally got a chance to meet mikeDoB and a few other people. Talked my head off. Received some official identifications on mystery bones collected over the past year. Saw some gorgeous southern women. Finally topped the day off with pizza hut.
6 am Sunday morning: The day of the hunt. It was raining on and off. We still managed to all make it in. I shot down the ramp* with only the phat fossil crew and a guide in front of me. I was headed strait for the back of the pit. The makos were again plentiful. A first for me was half of a 6 gilled cow shark and a 1 3/4 inch dolphin tooth. After a while the teeth were becoming harder to find. I felt myself slowing down from a lack of water. I made it back to the trail that leads to the ramp. I sat down and a sweet woman offered me some ice cold water. I graciously accepted. Somehow I then had the motivation to dig for a Yorktown meg. So I found a spot and proceeded to waste a little over an hour digging. NOT A SINGLE TOOTH.
I was then a beaten man, out of water and short on megs. I said hi to the few people I saw in the hills collecting and began to walk down the path towards the ramp. All I remember is walking on one side of the path, thinking to myself how worthless the Yorktown was around the trail because so many people have walked in and out ..... About 3 seconds later something large and black caught my eye. It was a root. Two root lobes sticking out of the Yorktown on about a 30 degree angle. My heart began to thump. I looked around to see if anyone was close to me. The only person in sight was a woman about 30-40 feet behind me. I looked down at the root lobes again and ripped it out. No time to waste, I had to know what the deal was. To my astonishment my day had just been flipped 100% upside down. I looked at the dirt covered tooth. 1st thought: Its massive. 2nd thought: Its in awesome shape. All I could do was laugh to myself. I'm sure a few people thought I was crazy.
The 6 hour ride home felt more like 3. The megalodon measured on a slant (Maryland measurment) 5-7/8 inches. I may never find a better meg.
I would like to thank PCS for allowing us to collect. Alot of other super nice finds were made. Strong # of megs, great whites, a well over 2+ inch upper hemi. The Calvert Marine Museum for needing volunteers. And finally momma!
