Finally got "The Big One"Saturday was the world famous fossil festival down in aurora, North Carolina. I spent most of the day talking to people and preventing children from throwing the Calvert Cliffs displays off the table. I also found a 500 little teeth in the pungo reject material.(The largest being a pretty 1 5/8 mako. Skinny with a bent tip. Ill try to get the picture up later). Anyway there was a little scare in the morning when we weren't sure in CMMFC was on the list to go in. All was well and we boarded the second bus to go in. The first bus left a least a half hour before we did and I thought alot of hope was gone for finding the big one. As soon as we walked down the ramp I saw some nice Yorktown on the right so I spend a little time there....And by the way it was hot! HOT! My original plan was to dig up this little pile I was working on last trip in march but the guides had the area roped off due to increase in water level. So I wondered around without almost anything to show. Kept walking all the way to the back of the mine when I saw what looks like a few piles of Yorktown with no one around it. I passed a guy on the hill to the right and dropped my gear and did the crawl. I was finding a few teeth maybe 2 nice makos in this area with some little stuff thrown in. I was looking in a gully when I decided to look up to see how close I was to the out of bounds line and about 10 ft in front of me I see this massive blade sticking out of the ground. I then sat down and had a nice three way talk to the tooth and Jesus. Another guy walked over and I yanked the tooth out. Kevin- -Obsessed1 then came up with his camera and we did a reenactment of what the tooth looked like in the york. It looked perfect even with the feeding damage on the tip. Turned out to be 4.5"/And man was i siked....Talk about releasing the pressure. So after that I just walked around with out a care in the world picked up a 1.5 upper hemi and some other makos around 1.5.
I tried doing a little digging after that and found 2 associated whale verts. Then went back to the ramp because of the extreme heat I wasn't feeling up to par. So I ended my day Quite well to say the least. Drove home as soon as I hit the parking lot. I did make a pitstop at burger king and saw the phat fossil brothers and their crew. Thanks to PCS for letting us collect the last day of the season. Now I know why theres no collecting in the summer time. HAHA
North Carolinas great but I cant wait to get back to the cliffs. If anyones planning on going out this weekend let me know.
Peace
ps. thanks kevin for the pictures!
