a run to the run.....Friday afternoon….. 1:00 p.m. and finished for work that day. With my job bringing me 1½ hours away from GMR, I had to decide. Do I drive 1½ hours back home and call it an early work day or make the 1½ haul to GMR knowing I have another 3 hours on the road before I make it back home?
The smell of the creek and sound of crunchy gravel were calling me so I opted for that latter. Then again, who was I kidding, I had my “gear” packed the night before…. just in case the timing “would” work out.
I screened at my favorite spot with the usual finds being exhumed. Found my second / largest mosasaur tooth with the bottom half broken off. Wished it was a perfect tooth, but then realized I could have found the bottom half wishing I had the tip. Also found my biggest meg to date, a little over 2” with about 20% of the tooth missing (don’t laugh…. I know most would have probably thrown that back in the drink, my time is coming). Also found my biggest belemnite to date, almost ½ inch thick and over 3 inches long (a fatty, by GMR standards).
Also found some unique bone material. Don’t know what it could be but it almost looks like vertebrae. Any help on identification would be appreciated.
After fighting the traffic through Raleigh, I finally made it home around 9 p.m. I had a bag fossils in one hand and a bag with Chipotle® burritos in the other… the perfect way to end a Friday.
happy hunting
