A Tale of Two PitsIt was the worst of collecting, it was the best of collecting. OK, it was not a Dicken’s novel exactly, but it sure felt that way at LaFarge today. I spent the first few hours watching the other collectors rack in the fossils while I saw layer devoid of fossils. I met up with the PhatBoyz who had made a one-day journey from Maryland, and they were bagging teeth at a madding pace. Due to the large mass of collectors, the newer areas were full of prints fast. I dug for a bit and bagged some Eocene makos. I decided to try my luck on the older section, and it was like a new pit over there. Strangely, it actually looked like it rained over there more than the new section. I found 90% of the days finds there. Not much was on pedestals, but the gullies had a few treasures. I nabbed two partial archaeocete teeth, and then a nice section of turtle shell. Small teeth were more abundant, and finally in a gully I almost stepped over a nice ric. As I un-earthed it, I noticed a strange color. I cleaned the mud off to find an opalized blade with lighting streaks. This was a trip maker. I met up with the PhatBoyz again, and they had racked in even more rics. I was most impressed with fossil tooth magnet in the black case; I need to buy one of those magnets!! As the July sun beat down harder and harder, I thought to myself, “It is a far, far better thing that I do…….”
