Two Bay Hunts

I headed to the beach Saturday, figuring that the weatherman was just kidding when he said something about severe weather.  The beach had already been worked pretty hard by the time I got there, so I didn't find much in the way of big teeth, but I did get some sweet Cowshark teeth, including my largest lower symphyseal to date at 11/16ths wide, and my smallest complete lateral at only 7/16ths wide.  Unfortunately, I was concentrating so much on finding teeth that I didn't notice the storm wall heading down the Bay.  Believe me, it's no fun to be out on the beach with 50 mph winds driving 1/4 inch hail, the rain mixing with dirt being stripped from the cliff face, and lightning hitting so close that the flash and bang are nearly simultaneous.  I found a nice space between two clay boulders, far enough from the clif to be (mostly) safe from falls, but still out of the water, and waited for the storm to pass.

Now, you would think that I'd have learned my lesson about not going out when severe weather is in the forecast.  Yesterday, with the forecast for thunderstorms and tornadoes, would have been a good chance to show off my new wisdom.  Instead, I headed back to the beach.  I did a little better this time, both with the teeth and with vacating the area before the weather hit.  I left the beach about 3 hours before a tornado hit Chesapeake Beach, just up the road from where I was hunting.  I rescued three Megs from the storm, the largest at 2-1/8 and in great condition, a 3/4 inch posterior with a chipped edge but intact tip, and a heavily worn 1 1/4 inch lateral.  I also got a couple sweet Cowsharks again, a few decent Makos, and a nearly complete smooth Ecphora.

Hopefully I'll get some nice weather for my next trip.

Tom, good account of braving adverse elements (hail, wind, possible twisters) to find teeth. If i ever find a symphseal like that it would be one of my alltime top teeth. Great posting! Content Quality : 10 of 10
